HockeyForecast.com was developed out of necessity. As a former pro NHL betting handicapper, I was responsible for researching each game every day. (As a rule of thumb, when other people's money is on the line you try not to lose it). There were some great sites that were used, which focus on advanced stats. They provide excellent, detailed player and team stats. However, we all know that the "better" team in the NHL doesn't always win. Each game has a certain randomness to it. Some teams play great on the road, some are extremely streaky, and others have NO heart and can't win a game if they don't score the first goal. I found myself looking at the same team stats over and over. With my eyes darting across a table 32 teams deep and 16 columns wide, I knew there had to be a better way...
Where is the data coming from?
All of the team and goalie stats come straight from the NHL.com API. Live odds are provided by DraftKings. The injuries list and head to head team records comes from hockeyreference.com.
Where are the live odds, goalie stats, and injury details?
On desktop- hover over the team logos, starting goalies, and injured players to see these details. On mobile- long tap instead of hover.
When is the site updated?
The site will update at midnight EST with the current day's games. This will display all games for the day with their start times. The team stats update at 1:00am EST, 8:00am EST, and again at 11:00am EST. This is done multiple times in an attempt to get the latest stats as soon as the NHL updates them. They might be current at 1:00am, should be current at 8:00am, but will DEFINITELY be current and up to date after the 11:00am update. Head to head team stats are updated at 5:00am. The injuries list updates at 5:30am, 12:30pm, 3:30pm and 6:45pm. Goalie stats are updated automatically at 7:30am and 11:30am. Starting goalies are added as soon as possible for each game. Live odds update every 5 minutes from 8am-1am.
What do you know about hockey anyway?
I played ice hockey for 30 years. Mite/Squirt was split between Wall American Eagles and the Syracuse Stars (Alex Tuch, Dustin Brown, Brian Gionta, Tim Connolly, Robert Esche, Tom and Tim Sestito). Pee-wee, Bantam and Midget was played at Brick Hockey Club (James van Riemsdyk, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Mathieu Schneider, Jim Dowd) and it was an absolute blast. My brothers and I were taught the game by a few legendary coaches here in the mid to late 90s, and we played on some really stacked teams. JVR was on my brother's squirt team that might've went undefeated all year. My brother played goalie and still talks about how he would rob James all the time in practice. Anthony Stolarz' brother was a goalie on my team, and I remember hanging out at his house one weekend playing videogames and floor hockey. Anthony was about 3 at the time, rolling around in the net and pretending to be Brodeur. I played high school varsity hockey at Christian Brothers Academy (JVR, TVR, Connor Clifton, Joakim Ryan) where I lead the team in +/- as a sophomore defenseman. We made it to the parochial school state final that year (after a thrilling playoff shootout win versus Delbarton) but ultimately lost to Bergen Catholic at Continental Airlines Arena. I finished my career at Monmouth University, on the same ice where I first learned to skate in 1992.
